Evening Gown Guidelines

As mentioned on the formal website, there are guidelines when purchasing an evening gown to be worn at the Christian Homeschool Formal. We are sending these guidelines to help in determining which gown may be appropriate to wear. (These guidelines are from previous formals)

• One person’s definition of cleavage may be another person’s definition of modesty. A practical guide to gauge a neckline is by placing a ribbon or measuring tape under the arms and around the chest and shoulder blades. While keeping the ribbon snug, the line will mark the top of the breast. The neckline of the dress should not dip below this line. However, if your dress does dip below the line, you should find a piece of material that could be sewn into the dress to cover any low places. This would also be an ideal opportunity to speak with your daughter about placing her hand on the neckline of her dress when she bends over. If she thinks this is unnecessary, have her bend over in front of a mirror. She can see for herself.

• The back of the dress should not fall below the bra line. Dresses that have a narrow (5” width maximum) area that laces are fine. An area wider than 5 inches must be lined with fabric. Please use discretion.

• A kick plate is the slit at the bottom of the skirt allowing more freedom to walk. Slits can be in front, back, or sides, but should not any higher than the knee.

• The fabric of the dress should have enough weight that a young man dancing with a young lady would feel there is something between him and skin. For instance, a slip would not have enough weight.

• No side or front cut-outs are permitted.

• Undergarments must be worn under dresses.

• If you are purchasing a strapless gown, the gown should stay in place without the young lady tugging or holding it up. Basically, the gown should stay in place. Again, remember the dances when shopping for a gown.

• Shoes- please remember you will be on your feet most of the night. Comfortable shoes are a must.

Understandably, a young lady may choose an evening gown that does not quite comply with the above recommendations. If the situation presents itself, we may either borrow a tuxedo jacket from one of the gentlemen or a provided shawl will be given to the young lady to wear for the evening.

As always, if you have any concerns about a particular evening gown, please feel free to contact either Dede, Kim or Terri at .

Thank you,
Kim McGorty and Terri Miller
